The More / Less / Go Closet Sort

How to run a 30-minute three-pile sort on one closet section — and the rule that decides which pile each item lands in.

Choose one closet section: a single rod segment, one shelf, or the floor of the closet. The unit matters because a section can be emptied, judged, and closed in 30 minutes, while a whole closet cannot. Clear a bed or a floor patch as the sorting surface and set a timer — the cap is what keeps decisions fast.

The three piles are verdicts, not storage. More means current rotation: worn in the last 90 days and chosen over its duplicates. Less means worth keeping in smaller quantity: the best one or two of any set stay, the rest move on. Go means it leaves the home. A fourth pile — maybe — is banned; anything borderline goes straight to the two checks described in The 90/90 Rule for Borderline Items.

The deciding rule is two questions: when did I last wear this, and would I pick it again today over its duplicates? Wardrobe audits repeatedly land on the 80/20 pattern — about 20% of garments take 80% of the wear — so expect the More pile to be the small one and treat that as a correct result, not a failure.

Close the session physically. Bag the go pile to the condition standard in Donating Decluttered Items and Claiming the Deduction, box the less items, and return the more items to the section. Photograph the donation bag while it is still open; that photo is the start of your deduction file.

After the sort, the count stays flat by rule: one-in-one-out, retiring one item for every one that enters. If the closet needs a harder reset, the Project 333 challenge sets a fixed budget of 33 clothing items for 3 months, excluding underwear, socks, and workout gear — long enough to prove which pieces actually carry the wardrobe.

  • Minutes 0–3: pick one closet section and clear a sorting surface.
  • Minutes 3–8: empty the section completely onto the surface.
  • Minutes 8–22: assign every item to More, Less, or Go — one touch each.
  • Minutes 22–27: bag Go, box Less, and set the bag by the door.
  • Minutes 27–30: return More items and photograph the donation bag.
